Audio Recording Devices

If you have a smartphone it will probably have a recording application on it. It may be called ‘Voice Recorder’ or ‘Memo’. Iphones / IPad all have such a program.

Recording on an Apple / Iphone etc.

The program you need is ‘Voice Memos’ – this is free with the device (do not buy anything!). Use of this is relatively simple – Open the program, press the Red Record button to start, and the same button to stop.

You can then ‘Share’ the recording – selecting email as the method to share.

When you record

You need to position the recorder on a flat stable surface. This should be close to you, ideally less than a metre away. The top of the device has the microphone, this should be pointing toward you as you sing.

Get your headphones plugged in to the device you will be listening to, then start the recording on the audio recorder, then start your backing track.

I can erase any sounds before / after the recording of your singing – but items like a telephone ringing during the recording cannot.

If you do not have a suitable voice recorder

I have two recorders available, as described below. They work in very similar ways, but the controls are slightly different.

Sony Recorder

Turn this on with a sprung sliding switch to the left of the device; move it in the direction indicated by ‘POWER’ on the side (it will return to the original position).

The display should light up. The device is now ready to start recording.

To start recording, press the ‘REC/PAUSE’ button on the front of the device.
You are now recording.

At the end of your recording, press the ‘STOP’ button.

If you need to, record again; there is a lot of space on the device (20 Hours or so!).

To turn the device off, slide the ‘POWER’ switch exactly as you did to turn it on. The display will go blank.

YAMAHA Recorder

Turn this on with a sliding switch on the back of the device; ‘ON OFF POWER’ move the sliding switch toward ‘ON’. The switch will return to its original position.

The display should light up. The device is now ready to start recording.

To start recording there are TWO steps:

  1. Press the red REC button (in the middle of gray circle with PLAY at the top and STOP at the bottom).
At this point the REC button will flash – perfectly nornal.
  2. Press the red REC again to start recording.
The REC button will stop flashing – you are now recording.

At the end of recording, press ‘STOP’ (just below the red record button).

To turn the device off, use same the ‘POWER’ switch as you did to turn it on, but hold it for 2 seconds or so. The display should go blank.
